Chennai, June 6, 2025 — The Madras High Court has dismissed a group of petitions seeking a re-examination of NEET-UG 2025 following a temporary power outage at a few exam centres in Chennai. With this decision, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is now permitted to proceed with the declaration of NEET UG 2025 results for over 22 lakh candidates.
Background of the Case
The controversy began after a group of 16 NEET aspirants reported facing difficulties during the national-level medical entrance exam conducted on May 4, 2025. The candidates, who appeared for the test at centres located in Avadi, KK Nagar, and Kundrathur in Chennai, alleged that a power failure due to heavy rainfall caused poor lighting and disturbances that hampered their performance.
The affected students approached the Madras High Court, demanding a re-exam, claiming that the test conditions were unfair and violated their right to equal opportunity.
Court's Verdict
Justice C. Kumarappan, who heard the case, ruled that there was no strong justification for ordering a re-examination. The court emphasized that isolated and temporary issues faced by a small number of candidates cannot be grounds for retesting a highly competitive exam written by over 22 lakh students.
"Granting a re-exam to a few would disrupt the interests of the vast majority of candidates who completed the exam without any such difficulties," the court stated.
The interim stay that had halted result declaration was officially lifted by the court on June 6.
NTA’s Response
In its defense, the National Testing Agency submitted a detailed affidavit confirming that:
-
- The power outage was brief and quickly managed.
-
- Natural daylight in the examination halls was sufficient.
-
- No on-site complaints were officially recorded on the day of the exam.
-
- Statistical data showed no significant deviation in scores from the affected centres.
NTA further added that CCTV footage and field reports confirmed that the examination continued smoothly despite the minor disruption.
Impact of the Judgment With the court's decision:
✔ NEET UG 2025 results are expected to be released within the next few days, most likely before June 14, 2025.
✔ There will be no re-exam for the affected candidates.
-
✔ The judgment reinforces the principle that unless there is strong, systemic failure, large-scale exams should not be re-conducted for isolated events.
Legal and Educational Significance
The ruling sets a precedent for future legal challenges related to high-stakes examinations. Education experts believe that the decision protects the integrity of national-level exams by discouraging unnecessary retest demands based on localised issues.
