Until the main campus is built, the MBBS classes for AIIMS Madurai will be temporarily held at State or Union gov't medical colleges. Although the second class of medical students at AIIMS-Madurai has been accepted, four years after the institution's groundbreaking ceremony, not a single brick has been set for its development. More than 100 kilometres distant from Madurai, the students are currently learning in rented classrooms on the fifth floor of the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College. The AIIMS Madurai project is not finished.
